Aug. 12--A Maryland man was ordered Thursday to serve six months in prison for threatening Geico employees during a dispute over a claim.
Taimur Ali, 31, of Essex, Md. was sentenced in Stafford County Circuit Court on a felony charge of threatening to bomb or burn. He was sentenced to a total of five years in prison with all but six months suspended.
Ali also received a suspended six-month jail sentence on a related misdemeanor conviction of using profane language.
According to the evidence presented by prosecutor Ryan Fitzgerald, Ali was insured by Geico in February of last year when he became unhappy with the company's handling of a claim he had filed.
He was on the phone with employees at the Geico building off U.S. 17 in Stafford when he threatened to come to Stafford and "shoot everyone in the head."
Fitzgerald said that although Ali never made the trip, he made at least one employees uncomfortable by repeatedly calling and asking where he was physically located.
Fitzgerald argued to Judge Michael Levy that instead of reacting to tragedies, courts need to deal proactively with this type of behavior.
"A threat of this nature should be taken as seriously as the act of carrying it out," he said.
Ali was convicted of the felony charge in March. He had been free on bond until being placed in the Rappahannock Regional Jail Thursday.
