Jan. 30--People racing to enroll in an insurance plan through Covered California have been granted a reprieve.
People who begin the enrollment process or make an appointment for help by midnight Sunday -- the original deadline -- will have until Feb. 6 to finish.
Covered California is the health insurance marketplace created through federal health reform.
------
People who use the extension must complete their enrollment with the help of an insurance agent, enrollment counselor, someone from an insurance plan or a Covered California representative.
------
The extension was brought about by a surge in enrollment applications.
"Our top priority is making sure consumers who are trying to get health insurance get the time and assistance they need," said Covered California Executive Director Peter Lee.
People who want to find assistance should click on "Get Help" at www.coveredca.com. They can start the enrollment process at the website.
They can also enroll by calling 800-300-1506, although phone lines may be busy.
