More Vehicles Stolen While Running With Keys Inside

Dec. 02--While you might be tempted to leave your car running with the keys inside so it can warm up as temperatures begin to plunge this winter season, AAA says that doing so only increases the chances of having your car stolen.

"As it gets colder outside, a warmer car is definitely more inviting, but it's more inviting to thieves as well," said AAA spokesperson Amy Parmenter. "With today's anti-theft technology, stealing a car has become more difficult but when you leave your car running, you've made it easy."

According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, the number of cars that were stolen with the keys left in them has been increasing each year from 2012 to 2014.

Parmenter said that according to the statistics there were 39,348 such car thefts in 2012, 42,430 in 2013 and 44,828 in 2014.

AAA recommends never leaving your keys inside your car, using a remote starter to preheat your car, or starting your car with keyless technology, locking it and taking the keys with you.

Besides, Parmenter noted, warming your car's engine up before driving it is unnecessary anyway thanks to today's technology.
