Japanese Automakers Plan To Sell Self-Driving Cars By 2020

Japanese automakers plan big moves and changes that will surely change the whole industry. Nissan, Honda and Toyota announced that they want to sell self driving cars by 2020. The announcement was made at Tokyo Motor Show, where each manufacturer sketched its ideas for autonomous vehicles.

Nissan Motor Co. CEO Carlos Ghosn emphasised that his company is in the race for developing autonomous driving. He expressed that Nissan has to invest in researching and developing this type of technology, bringing competition in an a low developed field.

"The tech companies will take as much space as we are ready to abandon," Ghosn told. "If we leave ground uncovered, if we are slow in developing autonomous cars, neglecting connected cars, well, guess what? We're going to be calling for more competition coming from outside the industry."

Nissan revealed its IDS Concept, a work in progress software that would allow the vehicle to become autonomous on busy streets. Little is known, so far, about this technology which is currently being developed by the automaker.

Toyota also has plans for implementing autonomous driving in their vehicles. Their efforts are concentrated on creating an autonomous driving system that would allow the vehicle to change lanes, pass other vehicles, take on ramps, but at the same time, the automaker wants to keep the wheel do that the driver can control the vehicle.

Honda is also interested in this kind of technology, but the automaker is looking for unique features to add to their vehicles. "We are still trying to think about what kind of features would make it something original to Honda," CEO Takahiro Hachigo said.
