Sept. 17--Customer satisfaction with homeowners insurance companies dipped in the past year, but consumers who bundle multiple policies with their carrier are significantly happier with their service than policyholders who don't.
Those are among the findings in the newly released J.D. Power 2015 U.S. Household Insurance Study.
Satisfaction is measured by examining five factors: interaction, policy offerings, price, billing and payment, and claims. Insurers are rated on a 1,000-point scale.
Overall customer satisfaction with homeowners insurers fell to 787, down from 790 the prior year.
The drop in satisfaction was driven largely by a decline in the billing and payment category.
Satisfaction among consumers who bundled their insurance averaged 810 vs. 741 for nonbundlers.
Rhode Island-based Amica Mutual ranks highest in overall satisfaction, with a score of 834. It was followed by Auto-Owners Insurance at 819 and Erie Insurance at 813.
USAA also rates highly but isn't included in the rankings because it's open only to military personnel and their families, J.D. Power explained.
Other insurers who received above-average scores included Geico, American Family, Bloomington-based Country Financial, Bloomington-based State Farm, Nationwide, Northbrook-based Allstate and Hartford.
